This is an intriguing idea that, we think, will gain traction. When public pensions were first introduced, younger workers paid into the system while most retirees did not live long enough to collect benefits. With ageing, this is becoming economically and politically unsustainable. To address the issue, this article argues that governments will have to make public pensions partly conditional on community work.
